Kuleana was inspired by the intimate relationship that Native Hawaiians have with their land. The design attempts to create a boundless sensation between the outside and inside as guests explore the hotel. The view is the sensorial experience that allows guests to establish a connection with the environment regardless of their location. The site offers the view of Diamond Head to the south and the ocean to the west, guests enjoy the presence of both from their rooms. The shape of the hotel uses north and west views as reference points to locate itself.
Boundless | Convergent.
As it descends, the mass on each floor is reduced to provide a 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape. The open areas created in the process, are used as terraces for residents on each floor. In public spaces, greenery and cultural heritage combine to lead the way towards a learning experience about Hawaiian culture. The design proposes a public library, an area for cooking classes, and art exhibitions as part of the program.
The hotel is where it all comes together.
Kuleana means two-way responsibility. “If people take care of the land, the land would take care of them.”
